Nomination Guidelines

The Office for Diversity Inclusion and Community Partnership announces the Mentoring Awards:

  • A. Clifford Barger Excellence in Mentoring Award
  • William Silen Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award
  • Young Mentor Award

It is widely understood that successful career development in basic/clinical medicine (teaching, research, clinical, administration) requires the experience of quality mentoring relationships. We request your nominations for candidates to receive these unique honors.  There will be a celebration to honor the recipients of these awards.

Nomination Guidelines

2011 Deadline for Nominations has passed.
Please check later for information on 2012 submissions.

For 2011-2012 Honorees please click here

You may nominate up to one individual for each award.  The required years of service as a faculty member (Instructor through Professor) at HMS/HSDM for each of these Awards are:

  • A. Clifford Barger Excellence in Mentoring Award - no minimum years of service
  • William Silen Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award - a minimum of 20 years of service (it needn't be continuous service)
  • Young Mentor Award – a maximum of 10 or less of years of service

Your recommendation should reflect the extent to which the mentor has provided sponsorship, encouragement and support for the career and/or personal development of yourself as well as for the career and/or personal development of other faculty, trainees, and students. Please be mindful when making your nomination that you are doing so for someone who merits recognition as an effective and outstanding mentor. It is not primarily for teachers.

The guidelines for submitting a nomination are as follows:

  • Submit on-line
  • Nominations must include a narrative of how this individual's mentoring has affected your career and/or the careers of others.  Nominations without such will not be considered.  It is often helpful to provide specific anecdotes/examples about the mentor or ways in which the mentor has shown an investment in one’s professional and/or personal development.  The following are a few examples of the qualities one might look for in a mentor.
    • Long-term commitment to mentoring
    • Advisor/Guide
    • Developer of talent/Coach
    • Opener of doors/Sponsor
    • Interpreter of organizational and/or professional rules
    • Successful role model
    • Protector/Shield
    • Rule setter/Boss
  • Each nominator may name up to one individual for each award
  • Each nominator may solicit additional nominations for his/her nominee(s), not to exceed four
  • Nominator must be or have been mentored by the nominee(s)
