Cultural Competence in Health Professions Education Institute
DESCRIPTION
The Federation of Associations of Schools of Health Professions (FASHP) is sponsoring a four-day interprofessional "Cultural Competence in Health Professions Education Institute" from January 18 through 21, 2007 at the National Conference Center in Lansdowne, Virginia. The institute is designed to help faculty and administrators integrate cultural competence into health professions curricula. During the interactive program, participants will work in teams to explore personal cultural values and consider how these influence encounters with others. Facilitators will describe the imperative for culturally competent health care services and how health care providers can play a role in reducing disparities. Through small and large group discussions, attendees will explore dimensions of culture that affect interpersonal relationships, communication, and differences that may exist between a health care provider and patient's perceptions of health and healing practices. Institutions with multiple health professions degree programs on campus will be encouraged to send a team consisting of one representative from each discipline for a maximum of five team members. Individual faculty members and single disciplinary teams may also register. Invited disciplines include allied health, allopathic medicine, chiropractic, dentistry, optometry, osteopathic medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physician assistants, podiatry, public health, and veterinary medicine.
