“The Importance of Diversity and Inclusion in the Life Sciences”

The Howard, Dorsey, Still Lecture is named for the first three African Americans who graduated from Harvard Medical School in the mid-1800s, and recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing the nation’s health.

This half-day program aims to prepare health professionals for the inevitable interactions they will have with the media during their careers. Mr. Stone will offer practical tips on “managing a crisis” before it happens, avoiding stereotypes, framing messages, explaining research to lay audiences, utilizing body language, and conquering stage fright.

Alvin F. Poussaint, M.D. Visiting Lecture

“Important Factors Negatively Impacting Asthma Outcomes”

Speaker: Michael B. Foggs, MD, FAAAAI, DFACAAI, FCCP, Chief of Advocate Medical Group, Advocate Health Care; President, American College of Allergy Asthma & Immunology

The Alvin F. Poussaint, MD Visiting Lecture Fund at Harvard Medical School was established with an inaugural gift from Harvard Medical School alumni/ae in honor of Dr. Poussaint. This year’s presenter, Dr. Michael B. Foggs, is the Chief of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology of Advocate Medical Group, Advocate Health Care in Chicago, Illinois. His presentation, “Important Factors Negatively Impacting Asthma Outcomes”, will examine the impact of race, airborne agents, obesity, vitamin D deficiency, and airway remodeling of the lungs on asthma outcomes.

Dr. Vickers is a nationally renowned leader in pancreatic cancer research. His research interests include gene therapy for treating pancreatobiliary tumors and the role of growth factors and receptors in pancreatic cancer.

    Dr. Tabak has served in various capacities at NIH, most recently as Principal Deputy Director. While maintaining an active research lab within the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Dr. Tabak’s major research focus has been on the biosynthesis and function of mucin-glycoproteins.
