ABOUT THE CENTER OF EXCELLENCE IN MINORITY HEALTH AND HEALTH DISPARITIES (COE)

The Center of Excellence in Minority Health and Health Disparities (COE), under the direction of the Minority Faculty Development Program, within the Office for Diversity and Community Partnership, Harvard Medical School seeks to enhance the academic performance of underrepresented minority (URM) students, to strengthen efforts to support the cultural competency preparedness of faculty, residents, and students, and to expand current models for URM faculty development and student/faculty research focusing on issues of minority health and health disparities. The COE's six programmatic areas of focus are:

STUDENT PERFORMANCE

Provide learning skills counseling and United States Medical Licensing Exam preparation

Strengthen efforts to link URM students with faculty advisors and underrepresented minority residents

Work in conjunction with HMS residency training directors to review effective strategies to enhance URM residency recruitment

Provide forums for representatives of the various HMS-affiliated hospitals and their training programs to meet with URM students

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT

Enhance communication to URM faculty by providing:

  • Web-based listing of available faculty positions
  • Web-based calendar of cross-Harvard career development seminars
  • Database of sponsored research/ funding opportunities related to minority health/health disparities

Provide learning counseling to assist URM residents, fellows and junior faculty in passing the Step III and Board exams

Offer a career development series that targets URM residents, fellows and junior faculty

Offer a Faculty Fellowship program that provides training and support for URM junior faculty with an emphasis on minority health and/or health disparities. (Also listed under Faculty and Student Research)

Research in Minority Health Seminar Series provides instruction and support for junior faculty conducting minority health research.

Develop and implement a pilot formal training program in cross-cultural competency for HMS students and residents

Conduct cross-cultural competency workshops held for residency training program directors and core clinical clerkship directors

Database, directory and bibliography of all HMS-affiliated investigators with an interest in basic or clinical research in minority health, health disparities or minority workforce issues
