FELLOWS' BIOS: 1999-2000


CHANDAK GHOSH, M.D., M.P.H.Chandak Ghosh

Medical Consultant for Federal Policy, USDHHS/HRSA; Attending Physician, Queens Hospital Center, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY

Chandak Ghosh is committed to the health needs of minority and underserved populations, particularly Asian/Pacific Islander groups. He works closely with immigrants in New York as part of his research into the impact of economic downsizing on quality of care. His publications and research presentations include the landmark “Healthy People 2010” and “Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders: Defining a Baseline of Information” (AJPH, December 2003), which has garnered national recognition. Dr. Ghosh, a board-certified ophthalmologist and a Commander in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, is currently with HRSA of the USDHHS as a medical consultant for federal policy. His work led to the development of HRSA’s National Performance Review Protocol. Other areas of concentration include health and the media, the uninsured elderly, and health quality measures. Dr. Ghosh is also a founding board member for South Asian Health Project, an initiative working to achieve health equity for South Asians in the United States. Among his awards, Dr. Ghosh was presented Commendation Medals from the U.S. Public Health Service in 2005 and 2006 for “groundbreaking policy research of national significance.”

After completing his undergraduate studies at Yale, Dr. Ghosh received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1995 and completed a chief residency in ophthalmology at Long Island Jewish Hospital/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1999. He served as a CFHU Fellow and received an M.P.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health in 2000.
