FELLOWS' BIOS: 2003-2004


NEFERTITI DURANT, M.D., M.P.H.
Nefertiti Durant

Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, Birmingham, AL

In addition to her faculty position, Dr. Nefertiti Durant is also a scientist at the Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education (COERE), at the School of Medicine, as well as a member of the Clinical Nutrition Research Center, School of Health Professions, and holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Medicine, Division of Preventive Medicine, all at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Durant’s research interests include racial/ethnic disparities in adolescent overweight and the relationship of overweight to the environment and physical activity. She was a physician consultant for the Children’s Hospital Boston Adolescent Medicine Program’s Obesity Task Force, and the “Gab and Go” intervention, a program that pairs peer leaders, health providers, and patients in a program designed to promote healthy habits for adolescents. Dr. Durant is a member of Academy Health, American Public Health Association, American Association of Pediatrics, and the Society for Adolescent Medicine Task Force. Ultimately, Dr. Durant desires to combine the lessons of clinical practice with sound research to recommend policy changes in the areas of adolescent overweight prevention and treatment.

Dr. Durant received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 2000. She completed her residency in pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC in 2004. Dr. Durant completed her M.P.H. degree at the Harvard School of Public Health as a CFHU Fellow in 2004. As part of that fellowship, Dr. Durant conducted research with the Health Resource Services Administration/Bureau of Primary Health Care on Obesity in Federally-Funded Community Health Centers.
