FELLOWS' BIOS: 2004-2005

CHRISTIAN ARBELAEZ, MD, MPH

Assistant Residency Director, Department of Emergency Medicine, Associate Director, Office for Minority Careers, Brigham and Women's Hospital; Assistant Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA

Most recently, Dr. Arbelaez led the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) sedat tion taskforce by developing and implementing a hospital-wide guideline to improve care of mechanically-ventilated patients at the BWH. He is also the co-investigator of a current RO1 NIH-funded study to evaluate rapid HIV testing in the emergency department. As Assistant Residency Director, he helps with the recruitment, mentorship, career development, education, and training of over 50 emergency medicine residents. He has published the first “Emergency Medicine Chief Resident Guide,” produced a leadership development seminar for residents, and spoken on this topic at national conferences. Finally, he has developed a national survey evaluating the emergency medicine chief residency role in graduate medical education. A member of the HMS admissions committee, Dr. Arbelaez is also participating on the standard setting panel for the USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills exam that will impact medical education testing nationwide. He has co-authored the Massachusetts State Commission to Eliminate Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities Workforce Diversity subcommittee report. He is also a member of the Harvard-Affiliated Hospitals Diversity Committee, the BWH Office for Minority Careers Director search committee, the Diversity in Medicine committee at the Massachusetts Medical Society, the Sullivan Alliance, Young Physician’s Roundtable with the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the Katrina Disaster Relief Efforts with the American Red Cross.

Dr. Arbelaez completed his medical degree at University of Texas, Galveston in 2000, the same year he participated in the Harvard Medical School Office for Diversity and Community Partnership’s Visiting Clerkship Program. He earned his M.P.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health as a CFHU Fellow in 2005.
