Explorations

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Explorations is a one-day program for selected Boston and Cambridge public middle schools that takes place in the fall. Approximately 250 6th, 7th and 8th grade students are hosted by Harvard faculty and research associates for a day of presentations, panel discussions about educational paths, and the pairing of individual students with researchers for laboratory activities. Reflection in Action: Building Healthy Communities is the spring component of this program and is open to all Boston and Cambridge residents. Explorations is sponsored by the HMS Office for Diversity Inclusion and Community Partnership, the Minority Faculty Development Program/ Educational Outreach Programs, the Biomedical Science Careers Program, and the Boston Science Partnership.

The schools targeted for the program are:

  • Mary E. Curley Middle School
  • Henry Dearborn Middle School
  • Washington Irving Middle School
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School
  • Lewis Middle School
  • Morse School (Cambridge)
  • New Boston Pilot School
  • John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics and Science
  • Orchard Gardens Pilot School
  • William Barton Rogers Middle School
  • James P. Timilty Middle School
  • Maurice J. Tobin K-8 School

OBJECTIVE

The primary objective of the program is to provide students with additional experience outside the classroom to enhance their science and mathematics curricula. The highlight of the program is the shadowing of laboratory scientists who are on the HMS faculty or who are postdoctoral fellows at Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Dental Medicine or Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.  Site visits take place in the teaching hospitals and professional schools of the Longwood Medical Area, and HMS labs in Cambridge.

New for 2006: As an extension of the Boston Science Partnership, Northeastern University and UMass Boston will participate in Explorations by offering lab visits to students from selected schools.
