What is Reflection in Action: Building Healthy Communities™ (RIA)?

RIA is a citywide student competition and a day of celebration of healthy living. Students can enter the contest in many categories including visual, written, and performing arts.

Who is eligible for the Reflection in Action contest?

Any 6th, 7th, 8th, or 9th grade student who lives in Boston or Cambridge is eligible to submit a contest entry form .

When is the contest deadline?

The contest extended entry deadline is February 25, 2008.

How do I enter the contest?

Download a copy of the contest entry form from the website and follow the instructions on the form.  Be sure to have a parent or guardian sign it.  There is a Resource Guide on the website with helpful information and ideas for your entry.

What kinds of things can I submit to the contest?

Paintings, sketches, photography, collage, drawing, poetry, essay, short stories, skits/plays, spoken word, dance/step, song/rap all can be submitted to the contest.

What are the themes for the contest?

Heart, Lung, Blood Diseases, Sleep Disorders, Oral Health, Urban Health Issues, and Health Disparities are all themes for the contest.

Can I submit an entry again this year if I did last year?

Yes. You can submit an entry as long as you are a resident of Boston or Cambridge and a 6th, 7th, 8th, or 9th grade student.

What information should be included on my entry?

All projects must be clearly labeled with the student’s name, address, phone number, e-mail, grade, program/organization/school affiliation, title of work, and category of entry (visual, written, or performing arts). If the entry is a group entry please make sure to list everybody on the entry form.

What do contestants receive?

1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will receive cash prizes or certificates. All contestants will receive recognition and be invited to attend the Tuesday, April 15, 2008 Reflection in Action: Building Healthy Communities™ celebration at Harvard Medical School.

Who can attend Reflection in Action: Building Healthy Communities™ in April?

Any 6th, 7th, 8th, or 9th grade student who lives in Boston or Cambridge can attend the event.

When is the event?

Reflection in Action: Building Healthy Communities™ will be held on Tuesday April 15, 2008 from 8:00am to 1:15pm at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

How do I sign up for the event?

Download the permission form, fill it out, and have it signed by a parent or guardian and fax it to us at 617-432-3834.

Can I come to the event alone?

You need to come with an adult chaperone. (Teacher, parent, guardian, etc.)

Can I bring friends to the event?

Friends are welcome to come if they are 6th, 7th, 8th, or 9th grade students who live in Boston or Cambridge.  They must send us a signed consent form and you and your friends must be accompanied by a teacher, parent, or guardian.

Who sponsors the event?

The Office for Diversity and Community Partnership at Harvard Medical School sponsors the event.

Is there parking available the day of the event?

Limited parking is available upon request. Please call 617-432-4697 to reserve a space.

Does it cost anything to attend or submit an entry?

No. It does not cost anything to attend or submit an entry.

Is there a rain date?

No. The event is held indoors and will definitely be on Tuesday, April 15, 2008.

Will there be any food on the day of the event?

Yes. A continental breakfast and lunch will be served.

What do I need to bring with me the day of the event?

Dress appropriately for the weather. There will be a place to hang your coat when you arrive.
